Travel Tuesday: A West Coast Weekend Getaway! dans Travel Tuesday

It’s the perfect destination when you need a quick getaway and only have one weekend away from work. You can find everything from forests and sandy beaches to turquoise waters and a local foodie scene! Tofino is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year, but it’s particularly beautiful in the summer.

Where to stay?

We stayed at the Bella Pacifica Campground, which is located on beautiful Mackenzie beach, and only about 5 minute drive from town. So far, this has been my favourite place to stay in Tofino, because it had good ratings and we were able to get a beachfront spot with an amazing ocean view! It's not cheap during peak season, but it's probably one of the most affordable lodging options in Tofino.

Where to eat?

Tacofino is a must when you’re visiting Tofino, you won’t be disappointed! The original food truck which started back in 2009 has since expanded into Vancouver and Victoria. I don’t care that everyone goes there for fish tacos, the crispy chicken burritos is the best. Don’t get me wrong, the fish tacos are amazing, but crispy chicken burrito can’t be beat! Although there are always very long lines, it worth the wait as this is some of the most delicious food I’ve ever had.

After a full day of exploring the region, there’s no better way than to cap the day off with some delicious ice cream, and Chocolate Tofino offers a wide variety flavours (my favourite: salty caramel). All of their products are made fresh in their tiny Tofino shop!

What to do?

There’s so much to do in Tofino — from whale watching, to sea kayaking, to black bear tours — but if you’re looking to save a few dollars, I would highly recommend hiking the Wild Pacific Trail. There is a 5 km loop that starts in various spots, we’ve done the entire loop a few times now and I just can’t get over the beautiful coastal views!

Where to drink?

Tofino Brewing Co. is certainly worth a visit! Thought we'd just stop in to grab a six pack, but were pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful tasting room. They offer beer flights, where you can sample different beers and they also sell growlers for a reasonable price. You can also buy cans or bottles to take away. Overall a great spot to enjoy a couple of beers!

Where to Surf?

Known as Canada's surf capital, there's a ton of beaches in Tofino, and Cox Bay is considered to be the best surf spot in the area. Pacific Surf Co. offers awesome lessons for beginners, as well as for the advanced surfer. I honestly didn’t think surfing would be as tough as it was, but we had blast getting tossed around the waves. The wet suits are a must, the water was pretty chilly.

Tofino is a pretty unique and spectacular place to visit, and is definitely a must-visit if you are anywhere in the area!
